How to Calculate Crypto Profit

Cryptocurrency profit depends on how much the asset’s price changes between the purchase and sale, as well as the amount originally invested.

The calculator first determines how many coins or tokens could be purchased at the buy price. It then values that quantity at the sell price and compares the result with the original investment.

Profit formula
Profit = Final Value − Initial Investment

If the final value is lower than the amount originally invested, the result represents a loss rather than a profit.

How to Use the Crypto Profit Calculator

You only need three values to perform a basic cryptocurrency profit calculation.

01 / INVEST

Enter Your Investment

Enter the amount of money invested in the cryptocurrency.

02 / PRICES

Enter Buy and Sell Prices

Enter the price paid for the cryptocurrency and the price at which you want to calculate a hypothetical sale.

03 / RESULT

See Your Profit or Loss

The calculator estimates your final value, profit or loss, percentage return and price multiple.

Crypto Profit Calculation Example

Suppose you invest $1,000 in a cryptocurrency when its price is $2. Your investment represents 500 tokens before accounting for fees.

Purchase
$1,000 ÷ $2 = 500 tokens

The initial $1,000 investment acquires 500 tokens.

Sale
500 tokens × $3 = $1,500

If those 500 tokens are later valued at $3 each, the position would be worth $1,500.

Result
$1,500 − $1,000 = $500 profit

The hypothetical trade produces a $500 profit before fees and taxes, equivalent to a 50% return on the original investment.

How to Calculate a Crypto Loss

The same calculation works when the selling price is below the purchase price. In that situation, the final position value is lower than the original investment and the calculator displays a negative return.

Loss example
$1,000 invested → $750 final value = −$250

The position has lost $250, equivalent to a 25% loss relative to the original $1,000 investment.

A percentage loss and the percentage gain required to recover from that loss are not always the same. For example, after a 50% decline, the remaining value must increase by 100% to return to its original level.

Crypto Profit vs Percentage Return

Profit measures the gain in monetary terms, while percentage return shows the gain relative to the amount initially invested.

PROFIT

Profit or Loss

The difference between the final value and the amount originally invested.

RETURN

Percentage Return

The profit or loss expressed as a percentage of the initial investment.

MULTIPLE

Price Multiple

The selling price divided by the purchase price, expressed as a multiple such as 2x or 5x.

How to Calculate Crypto Percentage Profit

To express a cryptocurrency gain or loss as a percentage, divide the profit or loss by the initial investment and multiply the result by 100.

Percentage return formula
Return (%) = ((Final Value − Initial Investment) ÷ Initial Investment) × 100

A positive percentage represents a gain, while a negative percentage represents a loss.

What Does 2x, 5x or 10x Mean in Crypto?

Crypto returns are often described using multiples. A 2x means the final price or value is twice the starting level, while a 10x means it is ten times the starting level.

  • 1x final value = 0% profit
  • 2x final value = +100% profit
  • 3x final value = +200% profit
  • 5x final value = +400% profit
  • 10x final value = +900% profit

The multiple describes the final value relative to the starting value. This is why a 10x does not mean a 1,000% profit: the original investment represents the first 1x, leaving a 900% gain.

Do Crypto Trading Fees Affect Profit?

Yes. A simple profit calculation based only on buy and sell prices does not capture every cost associated with an actual cryptocurrency trade.

Trading fees, spreads and slippage can reduce the amount of cryptocurrency acquired or the proceeds received when selling. The real profit from a trade can therefore be lower than the simplified result.

  • Trading fees may apply when buying and selling.
  • Bid-ask spreads can affect the effective execution price.
  • Slippage can affect trades executed away from the expected price.
  • Network or withdrawal fees may create additional costs.
  • Taxes can affect the amount ultimately retained after a profitable trade.

Does the Crypto Profit Calculator Include Taxes?

No. The calculator provides a mathematical estimate of profit or loss and should not be treated as a cryptocurrency tax calculator.

Tax treatment can depend on your jurisdiction, transaction history, holding period, accounting method and individual circumstances. A calculated trading profit is therefore not necessarily the same as a taxable gain.

What Is the Difference Between Crypto Profit and ROI?

Crypto profit tells you how much money was gained or lost, while ROI measures that result relative to the original investment.

For example, a $500 profit can represent a very different investment performance depending on whether the initial investment was $1,000 or $10,000.

Example
$500 profit on $1,000 invested = 50% ROI

The same $500 profit on a $10,000 investment would represent only a 5% ROI.

What This Crypto Profit Calculator Cannot Predict

The calculator shows the mathematical result of the buy price, sell price and investment amount entered. It does not predict whether a cryptocurrency will reach a particular selling price.

  • It does not predict future cryptocurrency prices.
  • It does not estimate the probability of reaching the sell price entered.
  • It does not determine when a target price could be reached.
  • It does not automatically include trading fees or taxes.
  • It does not constitute personalized financial or investment advice.

Crypto Profit Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate profit on crypto?

Calculate how much cryptocurrency your initial investment purchased, multiply that quantity by the selling price and subtract the original investment from the final value.

How do I calculate percentage profit on crypto?

Divide your profit by the original investment and multiply by 100. For example, a $250 profit on a $1,000 investment represents a 25% return.

How much profit is a 2x in crypto?

A final value of 2x the original investment represents a 100% profit. A $1,000 investment becoming worth $2,000 has generated $1,000 of profit.

How much profit is a 10x in crypto?

A 10x final value represents a 900% profit. For example, $1,000 becoming worth $10,000 produces $9,000 of profit before fees and taxes.

Can the calculator show a crypto loss?

Yes. If the selling price entered is below the purchase price, the resulting final value, profit or loss and percentage return can reflect a negative result.

Does the calculator include exchange fees?

No. Unless the values entered already include those costs, the simplified calculation excludes exchange fees, spreads, slippage and other transaction expenses.

Is the sell price a CryptoPredi prediction?

No. The buy and sell prices are supplied by the user for calculation purposes. CryptoPredi’s prediction pages separately present Bear, Base and Bull price scenarios.
